Networking doesn’t stop at the handshake. Conference etiquette plays a big role in how people remember you long after the event ends.
Here are a few guiding principles I encourage my clients to keep in mind:
- Respect people’s time. Don’t corner someone during a break or monopolize a speaker right after their talk. Be mindful of nonverbal cues and ask if it’s a good time to connect.
- Know when to engage—and when to pause. Just because you can network 24/7 at a conference doesn’t mean you should. If you or someone else needs a moment to recharge, that’s okay.
- Follow up with purpose. A quick LinkedIn note saying, “Great to meet you” is nice. But adding something like, “I appreciated your insights on [topic], and I’d love to keep in touch,” shows thoughtfulness.
- Participate in group chats and event platforms. Whether it’s a Slack space or an event app, don’t just lurk. Join the conversation in a respectful and professional way.
- Be inclusive. If you see someone standing alone, invite them into your circle. It costs nothing to be kind, and it adds real value to the experience.
Professionalism isn’t just about your resume—it’s how you show up in every interaction. At a conference, your reputation is being shaped minute by minute. Choose to be someone others remember for all the right reasons.
