How to Network in Fashion Without Feeling Awkward

For many people, the word “networking” brings to mind awkward cocktail hours and forced small talk. But in fashion and footwear, your network is your runway to new opportunities.

The Shift: From Transactional to Relationship-Building
Good networking isn’t about “What can you do for me?” It’s about “How can we help each other?”

Where to Start

  • Online: Comment thoughtfully on posts, send a short note to someone whose work you admire, or join LinkedIn groups in your niche.
  • In Person: Attend fashion weeks, trade shows, or association events, and focus on meeting just 2–3 people you genuinely connect with.

Conversation Starters That Work

  • “I saw your work on [project]; what was the most exciting part of that for you?”
  • “I’m curious, how did you get started in the industry?”

When you shift the focus to them, you take the pressure off yourself, and the connection feels authentic.
