Setting Intentions for Attending Conferences

Getting ready to travel to a conference? The most valuable preparation you can do isn’t what goes in your suitcase—it’s what goes on in your mind.

As a career coach and resume writer, I often work with job seekers and professionals who attend events hoping something will “just happen”. Maybe they’ll stumble into someone hiring, or a serendipitous handshake will land them their dream role. While yes, opportunities can come from unexpected moments, intentionality is what turns a good conference experience into a truly valuable one.

Before you attend, ask yourself:

  • Why am I going to this conference?
  • What do I hope to learn or take away?
  • Who do I want to meet or reconnect with?

A little research beforehand can go a long way. Look into speakers, attendees, or organizations you admire. Setting 1-2 clear goals for the event—like introducing yourself to someone in your dream role or attending a session that aligns with your career growth helps ground your experience.

Conferences are busy, and it’s easy to get swept up in the rush. But clarity creates confidence. When you show up with purpose, others notice—and conversations become more than just small talk.
