Working from home is a gift, but it comes with its own set of challenges. When I first transitioned to running my resume writing and career coaching business from home, I didn’t expect how loud the house would feel.
There’s always something calling for my attention:
- The dishwasher needs to be emptied
- A donation pile that needs to be sorted
- The dogs need to go out (again)
- That junk drawer, you know the one, is begging to be organized
It can feel like everything is urgent. But if I don’t take control of my time, the day will disappear. That’s why I swear by time blocking.
Time blocking has helped me protect space for different areas of my life:
- Deep work (writing resumes, coaching sessions)
- Admin tasks (email, invoicing)
- Life maintenance (laundry, errands)
Sometimes I even sandwich tasks: write a client summary, then take out the trash. It helps me shift gears without losing momentum.
Job seekers can benefit from this too. Searching for a job can feel overwhelming and endless if you don’t give it some structure. Try time blocking your week:
- Monday: Research 3 companies
- Tuesday: Apply to 2 jobs
- Wednesday: Reach out to 3 contacts
- Thursday: Resume or LinkedIn updates
- Friday: Reflect, review, and reset
You don’t have to spend 40 hours a week searching. You just have to be consistent and intentional. A little planning can bring a lot of peace.
