Let me start by saying something you might not expect from a career coach: I think AI is one of the most useful tools a job seeker has right now. If a blank page has ever made you freeze, AI can get words flowing in seconds. I’m not here to talk you out of using it.
But I am here to warn you about a quiet mistake I’m seeing almost every week, one that’s costing good people interviews without them ever knowing why. Because the very thing that makes AI so fast is the same thing that can make your resume disappear into the pile.
The authenticity gap is real
Here’s the stat that should reframe how you use these tools: roughly 8 in 10 hiring managers say they can tell when a resume was written by AI. And they don’t mean it as a compliment. When a resume reads like it was generated rather than written, it tends to sound polished but hollo, technically fine, but missing the specifics that make a real person hireable.
Think about it from the hiring manager’s side. They’re reading dozens, sometimes hundreds, of applications. More of those applications than ever are AI-assisted, which means they’re starting to blur together, same phrasing, same buzzwords, same suspiciously perfect sentences. In a sea of sameness, the resume that sounds like an actual human being talking about real work they did is the one that stops the scroll.
The 4 tells that give it away
Before you panic about your own resume, know that every one of these is fixable. Here’s what hiring managers tend to notice:
First, vague, buzzword-heavy bullets. Phrases like “dynamic, results-driven professional leveraging synergies” say a lot of words and almost nothing real.
Second, phrasing that’s identical to everyone else’s. AI tends to reach the same constructions, so thousands of resumes end up sounding eerily alike.
Third, no real numbers or specifics. AI can’t know that you cut onboarding time by a third or rescued a client account that was about to walk, only you know that.
And fourth, language that’s a little too perfect and personality-free. Real people have a voice. Assembly-line copy doesn’t.
Use AI as your editor, not your ghostwriter
Here’s the shift that changes everything: let AI help you draft but never let it have the final word. The candidates standing out right now aren’t avoiding these tools; they’re staying firmly in the driver’s seat. I call it the 3-pass method, and it takes about fifteen extra minutes.
Pass 1 — Draft. Use AI to get a rough version on the page if that helps you start. Beating the blank page is a legitimate win.
Pass 2 — Humanize. Go through every bullet and add the specifics only you know. The real number. The actual project name. The moment you turned something around. This is where your resume stops sounding like everyone else’s and starts sounding like yours.
Pass 3 — Read it aloud. If a sentence doesn’t sound like you talking about your own work, rewrite it until it does. Your ear will catch what your eyes skim past.
Coach’s tip
AI is brilliant at structure and terrible at memory. It can organize your experience beautifully, but it will never know what actually happened in the room. Your job is to put the truth back in; that’s the part no tool can do for you.
See the difference
Watch what a single rewrite does. Here’s a typical AI-generated bullet:
“Responsible for managing customer relationships and driving operational improvements across the organization.”
It’s grammatically perfect and completely forgettable. Now here’s the same accomplishment, run through a human pass:
“Rebuilt the client onboarding process for a 40-account portfolio, cutting setup time from three weeks to five days and lifting renewal rates by 18%.”
Same person. Same job. But the second version tells a hiring manager exactly what you can do for them, because it’s specific, measurable, and unmistakably real.
The bottom line
Using AI isn’t a problem. Outsourcing your voice to it is. Let it help you start, then make the resume yours, specific, honest, and human. That’s the version that gets read, remembered, and called back.
