One of the biggest hurdles in a career transition isn’t a lack of skills; it’s a lack of Identity Clarity. Statistical data (and my coaching experience) show that many high-achievers wait until they meet 100% of a job description’s criteria before applying. If you meet at least 80%, know you can achieve the other requirements, and feel confident you can do the job, go ahead and apply.
This “perfectionism” often manifests as “underselling” on a resume. You use passive language like “helped with” or “was involved in” because you don’t want to seem arrogant. If you led a project, say so. If you saved the company money, quantify it.
- Passive: “Handled customer complaints.”
- Active: “Resolved 40+ high-priority client escalations weekly, maintaining a 98% satisfaction rating.”
When your resume reflects your actual impact, you are more likely to stand out to recruiters and hiring managers.
